Basic Idioms & Phrasal Verbs 1 - 50

 

 

1. An honorable man always abides by his promises.

(존경할 만한 사람은 항상 자신의 약속을 지킨다.)

    abides by one's promises     : 약속을 지키다

   = keep one's promise 

   = be as good as one's promise 

   = be faithful to one's promise

  ․He is a man of his promise.

    (그는 약속을 잘 지키는 사람이다)

 

 

 2. Attend to your business above all things.

      (무엇보다도 너의 업무에 힘써라.)

   ․above all = first of all = in the first place  : 무엇보다도 

     = to begin[start] with = more than anything else

 

 

 3. The children are absorbed in play.

       (그 아이들은 노는데 열중하고 있다.)

   ․apply oneself to ～ing   = be absorbed in     ~에 열중하다. 집중하다     

     = abandon oneself to    = be engaged in

     = addict oneself to      = be indulged in 

     = devote oneself to      = be immersed in

     = give oneself to        = be lost in 

     = be (pre)occupied with

 

 

 4. We must abstain from speaking ill of others.

       (우리는 남을 헐뜯는 것을 삼가야 한다.)

   ․refrain from ～ing = keep from ～ing 삼가하다, ~을 못하다

 

 

 5. According to today's paper, there was a big fire in Pusan.

       (오늘 신문에 의하면, 부산에 큰 화재가 있었다.)

   ․according to + 目 : ～에 의하면 

    = on the authority of~

     according as + S-V : ～에 따라서

     (in proportion as) 

 

 

 6. His idleness accounts for his failure. 

      (그의 실패는 그의 게으름 때문이다.)

   ․account for  설명하다 = explain

   account for가 물주구문에 쓰이면 ‘～때문이다’의 뜻

 

 

 7. I am not accustomed to making a speech in public.

       (나는 대중 앞에서 연설하는데 익숙하지 못하다.)

   ․accustom oneself to ～ing   ~에 익숙하다

     = be accustomed to ～ing

     = be used to ～ing

 

 

 8. This adds to our difficulties. 

     (이것은 우리 어려움을 더욱 증가시킨다. = increase)

 

 

 9. He adheres to the party to the end. 

      (그는 끝까지 그 정당을 지지(고수) 하였다.)

   ․adhere to + 目 = stick to + 目 = cling to + 目 

       (달라붙다, 고수하다)

   

 

10. After all1 my advice, he failed after all2.

        (내 충고에도 불구하고 그는 결국 실패했다.)

 

   ① ～에도 불구하고

      after all = with all = for all

      = notwithstanding = in spite of = despite

      = in the face of = in the teeth of

      = without regard to = regardless of

      = irrespective of

   

 

  So you see I was right after all.

   ② 결국, 마침내

      in the long run = in the end = in the result

      = in conclusion = at last = at length

      = finally = eventually = ultimately

 

 

11. He makes the same mistakes again and again. 

      (그는 되풀이해서 같은 실수를 저지른다 )

        repeatedly : 되풀이해서

 

 

12. The climate here does not agree with me. 

       (이곳의 기후는 내게 적합하지 않다.)

   ․agree with ＋ 사람 (＝be of the same mind, suit) 

      : 동의하다, 적합하다

     agree to ＋ 사물 (＝consent to) : ～에 동의하다

 

 

13. I cannot agree to your proposal.  

       (나는 너의 제안에 동의할 수 없다.)

 

 

14. All at once the sky became dark and it started to pour.

      (갑자기 하늘이 어두워지고 비가 쏟아지기 시작했다.)

   ․all at once = all of a sudden = on a sudden

     = suddenly = unexpectedly = abruptly

     

 

15. It took him all but ten years to attain his object.

      (그가 그의 목표를 달성하는데 거의 10년이 걸렸다.)

   ․all but = almost

     

 

16. He has many faults, but I love him all the same.

                                       = nevertheless 그래도 ,역시

      (그가 결점이 많음에도 불구하고 나는 그를 사랑한다.)

 

 

17. He asked me my name, my age, my address and so on.

   ․and so on = and so forth= and the like = and what not

     = and the like = etc(et cetera)

    

 

18. I cannot answer for his honesty. 

        (나는 그의 정직을 책임질 수 없다.)

   ․answer for (=be responsible for)  책임지다

 

 

19. My mother is anxious about my health. 

        (어머니는 내 건강을 염려하신다.)

   ․be anxious about  = be uneasy about  걱정하다   

     = worry about[of] = care about

         

 

20. He is anxious for fame. (그는 명성을 갈망한다.)

 

   ․be anxious for 目/ to 󰅘 :갈망하다  

     = be eager for = be impatient for

     = be keen for = long for = yearn for

       [kiːn] a. 

      ① 날카로운, 예리한(sharp). [SYN.] ⇨ SHARP.

      ② (바람이) 몸을 에는 듯한(cutting); (비유) 뼈에 스미는, 통렬한(incisive).

      ⑥ (아무가) 열심인, (열심히) ┅하고 싶어하는(about; for; on; to do). [SYN.] ⇨          EAGER.

    ‡yearn [jəːrn] v.

     ―vi. ① 『+전+명』 그리워[동경]하다, 갈망하다(for; after).

           ② 『+to do』 간절히[몹시] ┅하고 싶어하다.

           ③ 『+전+명』 그리다, 사모하다; 동정하다(over).

     ―vt. 절실한 목소리로 말하다[읽다].

     ┈┈•∼ for a long vacation 긴 여름 휴가를[방학을] 갈망하다. ―vi. ①

     ┈┈•∼ to see a friend 몹시 친구를 만나고 싶어하다.②

     ┈┈•∼ over a person 아무를 동정하다. ③

     ㉺∼er ―n.   ㉺∼ful ―a.

21. His English is anything but correct. 

        (그의 영어는 결코 정확하지 않다.)

   ․never = anything but = by no means 결코 ~이 아닌 cf> nothing but= only

     = in no way = on no account 

     = be above ～ing = be far from ～ing 

     = not 名 whatever

 

 

22. Apart from joking. what do you mean to do?

       (농담은 그만두고, 너는 무얼 할 작정이니?)

   ․apart (or aside) from ～은 별도로 하고

     = independently of = except for

 

 

23. I applied for membership in the club.  

        (나는 그 클럽의 회원에 지원했다.)

    ․apply for 지원하다 (volunteer) = ask to be given

    

 

24. This rule applies to all cases.  

        (이 규칙은 모든 경우에 적용된다.)

     ․apply to  ～에 적용되다 = be true of = concern = fit

 

 

25. He applied himself to the study of English.

       (그는 영어 공부에 전념하였다.)

   ․apply oneself to   ～에 전념하다

     = give all one's energy to

 

 

26. We are apt to be wasteful of time. 

        (우리는 시간을 낭비하기 쉽다.)

   ․be apt to 󰅘  ～하기 쉬운

     = be liable to = be likely to = be prone to

     = tend to 󰅘 = have a tendency to 󰅘

  *prone 수그린, 납작 엎드린/ ~하기 쉬운 , ~의 경향이 있는

      lie prone 엎드리다

 

 

27. As a matter of fact I know nothing about the matter. (사실, 나는 그 문제에 대해 아무것도 모른다.)

   ․as a matter of fact = in fact

 

 

28. They work ten hours a day as a rule.

       (그들은 대체로 하루에 10시간을 일한다.)

   ․as a rule = at large = by and large  = usually

     = on the whole = for the most part 

     cf) as a whole  전체로서

  

 

29. As for clothing, she is always in shorts.

     (옷에 관해 말하면, 그녀는 늘 반바지 차림이다.)

   ․as for me = for my part = for the part of me

     = as far as I am concerned = speaking of me

     = talking of me = when it comes to me

30. He is as good as dead.

(그는 죽은 거나 마찬가지이다.)

   ․as good as = practically = no better than) 

      사실상, ～와 같은 

 

*as much as = although ~만큼이나, ~이지만

 as many as = equal to the number of  무려, ·만큼이나

 

 

31. He is, as it were, a bookworm. 

       (말하자면 그는 책벌레이다.)

   ․as it were = so to speak = so-called 

     = what we call = what is called

 

 

32. He will fail as likely as not. 

       (그는 아마 실패할 것 같다.)

   ․as likely as not = probably : 아마

 

 

33. As regards money, I have enough.

      (돈에 관해서라면, 나는 충분히 가지고 있다.)

   ․as regards = as concerns = as respects ～에 관하여 = as to

     = regarding = concerning = respecting

     = with[in]  regard   to 

                respect

                relation

                reference 

     ≠without regard[respect/relation/reference] to

       = regardless of = irrespective of

       ～와 관계없이, ～와 무관하게, ～에도 불구하고

34. He was late for school as usual. = in the usual way

(그는 평소처럼 학교에 지각했다.)

 

 

35. He gave me food and money as well. = besides 게다가, 덤으로

       (그는 내게 음식과 게다가 돈까지 주었다.)

   ․both A and B = at once A and B = alike A and B

     = A and B as well = A and B in addition 

     = A and B into the bargain = A and B alike

 

 

36. The matter has not been settled as yet.

       (그 문제는 여태껏 해결되지 않았다. = up to now)

 

 

37. I asked for my friend in hospital. 

       (나는 병원에 있는 친구의 안부를 물었다.)

   ․ask after = inquire after

 

 

38. I was at a loss what to do. 

       (나는 무얼 해야 할지 어쩔 줄을 몰랐다.)

   ․be at a loss 당황하다 

     = be at one'w wit's end

     = be perplexed = be embarrassed = be puzzled

     = be bewildered = be confused = be uncertain

*at stake = at risk (생명, 명예, 안전 등이) 위기에 처한

 

 

39. It occurs at times that the traffic is disorganized by fog.  (안개로 교통 혼란이 가끔 발생한다.)

   ․at times = at intervals = between times = sometimes

     = on occasions = occasionally = on and off 

     = (every) now and then

 

 

40. You must keep your promise at all costs.

        (너는 무슨 일이 있어도 약속을 지켜야 한다.)

   ․at all costs = by all means, certainly

     : 어떤 일이 있어도, 꼭

 

 

41. I will start tomorrow at all events.

        (어떤 경우라도 나는 내일 출발한다.)

   ․at all events = in any case = at any rate 

      : 어떤 경우라도

 

 

42. I will try to help him at any rate. 

      (어쨌든 나는 그를 도우려고 노력할 것이다.)

 

 

43. The old man cannot live more than a week at best.

       (그 노인은 기껏해야 일주일 이상 살지 못한다.)

   ․at best = in the most favorable case

 

 

44. I found the job difficult at first, but soon got used to it.   (나는 처음에는 그 일이 어려운 것을 알았지만, 곧 익숙해졌다.)

    at first = in the beginning

 

 

45. I got the news at second hand.

 

 

46. I got the news at first hand.

      at first hand  직접적으로  = directly

     at second hand  간접적으로 = indirectly

 

 

47. The examination is near at hand. 

        (시험이 가까이 다가왔다.)

   ․near(close) at hand = just around the corner

 

 

48. Please make yourself at home. (편히 하세요.)

                          comfortable

 

 

49. The people at large are against war. 

       (사람들은 대개 전쟁에 반대한다.)

   ․at large = by and large = on the whole usually 

 

 

50. In spite of many hindrances they have at last succeeded.

       (많은 장애에도 불구하고 그들은 마침내 성공했다.)

    at last = in the end = finally =in the long run
